Finger food anyone?

by fancypants, August 25, 2011

The other evening, after one of the kids’ parties, we were short on time and really lacking ingredients, so I decided to create a kind of cocktail party theme dinner time!

I unearthed a baguette (we are always trying to provide our French au pair with mildly acceptable baked goods) and unloaded the fridge of as many ingredients I could find for toppings. Some pesto sauce, fresh tomatoes, sun dried tomatoes, red peppers, shallots, garlic and cheese.

I am blessed to have a delightful herb garden, so decided to create a crostini based on the four herbs I cut from my garden. (I would have called these bruschetta, but Darian and I always argue on the pronunciation). I pulled chives, basil, rosemary and cilantro, which, thankfully, we all eat. It’s a polarizing kind of herb: you either love it or hate it.

I toasted the baguette slices in the oven with a little olive oil and then concocted my four crostini. Grilled cheese and cilantro, with a cilantro lemon mayo base. Sundried tomato with parmesan and fresh basil ribbons. Red pepper with a chive aioli. And finally, Roast Beef on top of a rosemary aioli, topped with baby tomatoes. Let’s also make it clear that I don’t really know the difference between an aioli and mayo, crostini or bruschetta, but it sounds so darned nice! Everyone had their favorite, it made for a fun meal, and accompanied by a nice glass of Pinot Grigio (no, no, not for the kids of course), we felt quite in the party mood! I quite like the idea of adult finger food!
