Warning: I’m going to do a little boasting here. All three of my kids recently went on playdates where the parents commented on how polite my kids are. And of course I couldn’t be more proud. Since they could speak we’ve taught them the importance of saying “please” and “thank you” and how to respond when someone asks how you are. And that you always return the question.

It’s astounding to me how often I hear adults being impolite. In the line at Starbucks, a smartly dressed woman orders her coffee without a murmur of a please or thank you. Speaking to a customer service person on the phone: I say thank you, they say “mmhm”(which I have to say is an endemically American thing).

But just a simple consideration to the person on the other side can be so impactful. Just the simplest way to pay it forward: a please or thank you. If you don’t already, give it a try and let’s spread how cool manners can be. Just ask my kids.
